Yi Chun Wang – Calligrapher

Yi Chun Wang was born in Chiayi and currently lives and works in Taipei. She holds an MFA in Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from National Taiwan University of Arts.

Her practice explores calligraphy through diverse forms, drawing from classical poetry, contemporary writing, and everyday language. Her work emphasizes the expressive potential of brush movement, balancing ink and negative space to create a sense of air and openness.

Through fluid semi-cursive structures, her writing carries emotional nuance, forming a distinctive style particularly evident in her small-scale works. In recent years, she has expanded into large-character calligraphy, pushing the limits of bodily movement and rhythmic control, continuously searching for new forms between softness and strength.

For Wang, calligraphy is both concealment and release. Through brush and ink, she constructs a space between hiding and finding—a shelter built with writing as its structure and life as its material. Between each fragment lies a crack, and within those cracks, light emerges—refracting into a landscape of words.
